Looking at records in the last three decades, Pakistan has had the edge over India in all Champions Trophy events. But India holds a prestigious unbeatable record against Pakistan in all ODI and T20 World Cup games.
In every edition of the 50-over World Cup since 1996, India has had the wood over their arch-rivals Pakistan.
Former Pakistani pace great Waqar Younis had his chances to help his team trump past India in 1996, 1999 and the 2003 World Cups. However, the ‘Men in Green’ were handed defeats in each of the three occasions.
Further, India defeated Pakistan in 2011, 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cup fixtures. Also, their losses in the World Cup to India even translated into the T20 World Cups in 2007, 2012, 2014 and 2016.
Overall, India has won all eleven World Cup contests across all formats, against their old foes, Pakistan, giving birth to the famous ‘Mauka Mauka’ advertisement campaign on Star Sports.
Now, Younis delved into citing out the reason for their losses against India in World Cups of the last three decades.
“Over the last few World Cups, Pakistan have not won against India. We did well in other formats, we did well in Test matches, but when it comes to World Cups and ODI Cricket, India has always had an upper hand on us. And they deserve it. I think they played better cricket than us,” Waqar said while speaking to his fan on Twitter.
“I remember in Bangalore and back in I think that was in Pretoria in 2003. I remember most of them and I think I have played a couple of them. So they were a very good side and I think on that particular day they just came out with a very positive frame of mind, they played better cricket and played smartly,” he added.
“We did not play smartly; we had games in our hands. If you look at the World Cup in 2011 and then of course back in ’96 also we had the game in our hand, but it is just, we… we just threw it away. It is hard to pinpoint why we do that, maybe, it’s just the pressure of the World Cup now because it happens so many times, it is just the psychological pressure on us that we just cannot really win against them but yeah, it’s very-very difficult to pinpoint on one thing,” Waqar concluded.
